The Whale As An Interesting And Diverse Species

For those who study this fascinating ocean-dwelling and warm-blooded mammal, the story of the whale has an interesting and diverse species is added to with each passing year that it has been observed in its environment. For sure, there has been intensive study of this animal and the complex world that it creates and inhabits on the oceans and seas of this planet.

When discussing their evolution, it always comes as a surprise to those who don’t know about whales that their closest living relative is the hippopotamus. Both animals descended from a common ancestor that lived in India, in Kashmir, over 54 million years in the past. This ancestor finally entered the ocean for good nearly 50 million years ago.

Whales communicate with each other in a variety of ways, the most common probably being what is known as whale song. This particular “singing” has proven to be extremely diverse and complex in quality and characteristic. Whales use it in a variety of ways. Also, other than certain species of primates, whales — along with dolphins, humans and elephants — whales seem to be one of the few species that are self-aware.

The societal structure of whales is also complex. Existing in a group of whales known as a pod, males, females and calves arrange themselves in certain types of hierarchies that usually involve a pod being led by a single dominant bull — which is the term for a male of the species — cows (females) and calves (young whales). Non-dominant bulls live on the edges of the pod and may strike out on their own, eventually.

In terms of size, the Blue Whale is the largest currently existing mammal. It is also the largest animal that has ever lived. This particular species can grow up to 105 feet in length and 150 tons in weight. There are several other species nearly its equal in dimension. Whales generally are divided into two sub orders, whales that have tea and whales that strain seawater through a filter known as baleen.

Toothed whales are considered to be predators, with the most well-known probably being the Orca or killer whale. It wasn’t until the last 50 years or so that the whale has been looked at as more than just a convenient food source or commodity. Some species of whales have been so completely over-hunted that they are in danger of extinction if steps aren’t taken to protect them.

News From Mars

Only last weekend the JPL team which is leading the operations of the two rovers on Mars declared alert after the on board computer of Spirit has rebooted twice .The robot communicated with the Earth ground station Friday as well as in weekend but the transmission was blurred although physically speaking the board parameters were nominal (the solar panels produce sufficient energy, the batteries are loaded and the external temperature are normal).

Spirit has 2 ways of communicating with Earth: either through direct transmission, indirect transmission, or using the UHF band to redirect the date to the satellites in orbit around Mars.

Last weekend the communication was set to go on using the main on board antenna but it seems that one reboot took place during this communication. For now the reasons for this event were not discovered but for security improvement the choices was not to use the antenna anymore.

In the following period the accent will go on the physical data collecting for the onboard equipment downsizing the data resulted from scientific measurements especially in order to help the research team find out the source of the malfunction.

One of the suspicions refers to the software which was replaced last month but on the other hand the same software operates the other rover and there didnt appear any kind of problems. Another chance can be the fact that the electronic became old.

The rovers turn 5 in January and although the working parameters are normal, a thorough investigation could unveil malfunctions that can only add to the list of already known problems. (Spirit operates since 2006 with only 5 of the 6 wheels).

Momentarily parked on Home Plate (Spirit) and on Endeavour Crater (Opportunity), the two rovers are waited the date of 21 April when Mars came at a full orbit of 23 month around the Sun and in the closest point to it. The rise of the temperature and the dust storms accompanied the phenomenon and endangered the scientific experiments ran by the two robots.

Because the solar energy is responsible for the functioning of the electrical gear the operations team had to make a compromise between the security of the robots and the continuance of the scientific experiments.

At the very least they are trying to improve the mileage of driving a car. This has become a very serious topic for most. Use caution with those claims that promise to double your gas mileage or generate free energy.

Globally, scientists are trying to find a way to gain some efficiency from the conventional engine. This is so that automakers can turn plummeting sales around. Hopefully they can at least pacify the consumer.

In order to pull this one off you would have to have the key to breaking the law of thermodynamics. Many back yard mechanics have attempted to take matters into their own hands. They are trying to find a way for you to get better gas mileage too.

Interesting Whales Facts: Anatomy And Behaviors

The whale is a magnificent creature. Who is not intrigued by one of the largest and most intelligent creatures in the sea? Here are a few interesting whales facts you may not have known.

Cetaceans are the family of animals that whales belong to. This also includes porpoises and dolphins. They are the only mammals that live their entire life under the waters of the sea except for manatees. Being mammals, they are warm-blooded, breathe air through a blowhole, and give live birth. The average blue whale is about 94 feet in length, making it the largest creature to ever exist. The smallest would be the dwarf sperm whale at 8 feet.

Two groups of classification make up the Cetacean family. They are either toothed or baleen. There are about 66 toothed varieties. They have peg-like teeth that basically spear their prey, which they will then eat whole. They locate their food source through the use of echolocation. The baleen variety has a comb-like feature that simply acts as a filter. They gather food like krill as they swim along. There are 10 species of this variety.

This amazing creature has some very unique behaviors. Breaching involves acrobatic jumps out of the water for play. They also spy hop, poking their heads out of the water to have a look around. Lobtailing is when the animal sticks its tail out of the sea and then slaps the water to make a loud noise as a warning. A whale will also rest by logging, meaning they float on the surface with their blowhole up.

The whale also is known for its singing. They have very haunting and complex songs. They can last up to an hour at times when sung by the blue! The sounds range from whistles and clicks to low frequencies. There are several reasons for this particular behavior. It is employed to communicate with its pod, attract a mate, and even to express grief or excitement. They can be heard literally for miles through the water!
